Eligibility to apply for a Vanier CGS

To be eligible for the Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship (CGS), candidates must adhere to the following criteria:

1. Sole Nomination: Applicants should be nominated by a single Canadian institution that has received a Vanier CGS quota.
2. First Doctoral Degree Pursuit: Individuals must be pursuing their initial doctoral degree, inclusive of joint programs such as MD/PhD, DVM/PhD, or JD/PhD, provided there is a substantial research component.
3. Intent for Full-time Doctoral Studies: Successful candidates are required to intend to pursue full-time doctoral studies and research at the nominating institution during the upcoming summer semester or academic year following the announcement of results.
4. Study Duration Limits:
   a. The candidate must have completed no more than 20 months of full-time study in their doctoral program as of May 1, 2024. This period starts from the doctoral enrollment date, following the completion of a Master’s degree.
   b. For those in joint graduate research programs, the limit extends to 32 months of full-time study by May 1, 2024. This includes individuals enrolled in programs like MD/PhD, MA/PhD, or DVM/PhD. The calculation begins from the official registration date in the joint program, encompassing the Master’s portion if applicable.
   c. Direct enrollment from a Bachelor’s to a PhD is included in the 32-month limit, with the calculation starting from the doctoral enrollment date.
   d. Individuals who were previously enrolled in a Master’s program without obtaining the degree will have the study months calculated from the original Master’s enrollment date.
5. Academic Excellence: Candidates must have achieved a first-class average, as determined by their institution, in each of the last two years of full-time study or its equivalent. It is recommended that candidates consult their institution for the specific definition of a first-class average.
6. No Previous Doctoral-level Scholarships or Fellowships: Eligible candidates should not currently hold, or have held in the past, a doctoral-level scholarship or fellowship from CIHR, NSERC, or SSHRC for the purpose of undertaking or completing a doctoral program.

Please note that only the PhD portion of a joint program is eligible for funding.

Eligibility of program of study

• A qualifying doctoral program is characterized by a substantial research component culminating in the production and evaluation of a thesis, major research project, dissertation, scholarly publication, performance, recital, and/or exhibit. These academic endeavors must undergo rigorous merit and expert review at the institutional level, serving as integral requirements for program completion.
• Additionally, joint graduate research programs that integrate a professional degree (such as MD/PhD, DVM/PhD, JD/PhD) are considered eligible. Clinically-oriented programs, including clinical psychology, may also meet the eligibility criteria provided they incorporate a significant autonomous research component, consistent with the aforementioned criteria.

Nominees will be evaluated and selected based on the following three criteria, which will be weighted equally by the selection committees:
