Eastern Tennessee State University – MS in Biology

With three concentration options—Biology, Biomedical Sciences, and Microbiology—students will choose a major professor by the end of the first semester. To facilitate this decision, students will interview faculty members during their first semester to determine their research interests and explore opportunities for participation in ongoing research programs.

The major professor, in consultation with the student, recommends at least two additional members for the student’s advisory committee. Individuals from outside the program may also be included. The advisory committee will work with the student to develop a plan of study based on the student’s background and interests. This plan must be approved by one of the program coordinators.

The advisory committee will meet with the student at least once per semester to assess progress, ensure the plan of study is being followed, make suggestions, and provide supervision as needed. The committee’s composition is flexible and can be changed with written justification. It is the student’s responsibility to maintain acceptable progress toward completing all degree requirements. Georgia Southern University – MS in Biology

The Department of Biology supports graduate students through a limited number of teaching and research assistantships. Teaching assistantships are awarded on a competitive basis to any qualified full-time graduate student in the Department of Biology, prioritizing those in the thesis track. If all slots cannot be filled by thesis students, non-thesis students may receive a teaching assistantship. These assistantships include a stipend and a tuition waiver, covering all but $25 of in-state or out-of-state tuition. As a teaching assistant, you are only responsible for student fees and health insurance. Research assistantships are grant-funded and offered on an unpredictable basis by individual faculty members. Research assistants perform research-related duties in exchange for a stipend, with their tuition and fees typically covered by the grant. However, each research assistantship is unique and depends on the specific grant providing the funding. Visit
